Network Device Switching

Release Version(s)Controller (4.12)Launch DateApril 6th, 2021

Product description

Network device naming/switching will now give users the ability to quickly switch between devices that are connected to the Node. This will be done through the controller's menu option 'Switch Devices'. Additionally, users can give these devices nicknames that will better help them identify their desired device for switching in both the 'Switch Devices' menu but also the network table on controller startup.

Problems solved

After some beta testing with a fleet of 6 DTPods in a permanent Node installation, testers wanted a more intuitive and faster way to view/control the pods instead of having to restart the controller or performing a reconnect ROV. So instead of making them go back to the network table each time, we made a menu item that shows whenever there are multiple devices connected to a Node where users can switch between their active devices.

The other feedback we received from testers was that they couldn't remember which pod they wanted to switch to. This was because we had no way for users to identify their devices through the controller in a way that makes sense for their arrangement. To combat this we gave users the ability to add a name to their device (if there is more than 1 of the same type of device connected) for easy identification.

Product Screenshots/Videos

2. Users can find Switch Devices through the Main Menu of the controller. This will only show if there is more than one device connected to the node.

3. A list of devices on the node will show up here where users can either rename or connect to them.

4. If a user clicks rename, it will open up the keyboard.

5. Once renamed the list will update with the new name and so will the network table (shown below). If a user wants to connect to a device they can select 'Connect'.

6. Once they issue a connect, the controller will automatically reconnect to the device specified in the last step.

7. The device will now be switched.
